A quick trip into the city to see a matinee, we didn't want to venture far. On the walk back to Grand Central, on 44th Street, we came across Jane Doe and decided to get a bite to eat before heading home. Such a warm and lovely spot. The front area is a bar, but if you walk back there is table service. The staff was lovely and had the right amount of attentiveness. The draft beers were served nice and cold. They have happy hour specials from 11am-8pm daily. We ordered a Jane Doe Burger and a Short Rib Grilled Cheese. The burger was a very good one, a nice beefy patty, that was juicy, well seasoned and cooked perfectly medium as ordered. Served with lettuce, tomato, red onion and a special sauce, it hit the spot. The fries were also nice and crispy. The only improvement I would have liked was that the cheese be melted. The Short Rib Grilled cheese, wasn't a grilled cheese, but a short rib sandwich on ciabatta topped with cheese and pickles. It was quite good as well, also served with fries. This is a great spot off of Times Square to grab a drink or a meal.
Went to Jane Doe using a Pulsd dinner deal. Although the entrees we had were surprisingly good, this seems like the type of place that is better for apps/drinks. I had the angel hair mussels pasta dish which was light and packed with seafood. My drink, a pumpkin martini was delicious. It was strong and well balanced. I would definitely come back for Happy Hour! They have $1 oysters, taco Tuesday, karaoke, $10 martini days and more. Jane Doe is definitely an NYC Happy Hour hidden gem. Unfortunately, our waitress, though friendly, was way too busy to give anyone in our section adequate attention. I went without a water refill for the entire meal and had to track her down to pay the bill.
There I was minding my own business when I happened upon a happy hour sign hosting $1 oysters (with the purchase of a drink). I was 3+ hours away from a business dinner, and finding myself a bit peckish. Oysters sounded like the perfect solution to tide me over, so in I went. I was greeted with lovely fall faux-liage decorating the bar, and as an added bonus, they had the NLDS game on. I ordered a (slightly) dirty martini and a dozen oysters, and both arrived expeditiously. The oysters were absolutely delicious and totally hit the spot. The martini was equally lovely. Super friendly service, laid-back vibe, and great happy hour specials. What more could you possibly ask for. I 100% recommend popping in if you happen to be in the area. I was delighted with my spontaneous drop in experience.
Went here on a whim--$1 oysters (with a purchase of drink, 6 minimum!) What a deal! Oysters were huge and delicious. Fish taco was a bit bland for my friend, but the spicy sauce was great. Attentive service as well. Also loved the fall decor inside. Overall, would be back!
Located next to the entrance of the Mansfield Hotel in midtown Manhattan, Jane Doe is a restaurant that specializes in Italian dishes and comfort food. One aspect we particularly enjoyed about the restaurant was its layout, with a separate bar area from the main dining floor. To begin our meal, we ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio and a Margherita flatbread. Unfortunately, the flatbread never made it to our table due to a staff oversight. As a result, we deducted one star from our overall experience. For our main courses, I opted for the black linguine with shrimp and calamari, while my partner selected the grilled Branzino with vegetables and mashed potatoes. Both dishes were delicious and clearly made with fresh ingredients. To conclude the meal, we indulged in fried cheesecake accompanied by a scoop of ice cream. All in all, it was a satisfying dining experience. Despite the mishap with the appetizer, our waiter made up for it by providing bread and butter. We found her to be genuinely friendly and helpful, addressing our questions about the menu and ensuring our orders were taken care of. In light of this, we restored the lost star. We look forward to returning to Jane Doe in order to explore more of their menu offerings.
